Tributary streams provide migratory fish with access to floodplain habitats in a regulated river: evidence from alligator gar, <i>Atractosteus spatula</i>

چکیده

Migratory fishes with periodic life history strategies are sensitive to river regulation. Populations of these may persist in highly regulated rivers by using tributaries that provide access intermittently connected spawning and early stage habitat floodplains. We analyzed system hydrology associated movement a long-lived strategist, the alligator gar ( Atractosteus spatula), Brazos River, Texas. hypothesized (1) flow regulation on mainstem has resulted reduction flood pulses, but have been less altered (2) migrate into during high flows temperatures. Our analysis revealed pulses were reduced not an adjacent, tributary where floodplain-inundating now outnumber those mainstem. Using data from tagged fish, we derived statistical models predicting greater occurrence when water temperature exceeded 25 °C discharge 400 cubic meters per second. These results emphasize can mitigate impacts populations gar.

Influence of Stream channel morphology and in-stream habitats on fish community in Golestan province Streams

Four streams with different sizes were selected for studying the effects of environmental factors on fish assemblages using indirect (Detrended Correspondence Analysis, DCA) and direct (Redundancy Analysis, RDA) gradient analysis in Golestan province. DCA of presence-absence and relative abundance data showed well gradient and linear model of species variability. In the within-site RDA, environ...

Do nursery habitats provide shelter from flow for juvenile fish?

Juvenile fish nurseries are an essential life stage requirement for the maintenance of many fish populations. With many inshore habitats globally in decline, optimising habitat management by increasing our understanding of the relationship between juvenile fish and nursery habitats may be a prudent approach. Previous research on post-settlement snapper (Chrysophrys auratus) has suggested that s...

Influence of methylmercury from tributary streams on mercury levels in Savannah River Asiatic clams.

Average methylmercury levels in five Savannah River tributary streams, sampled 11 times over 2 years (0.170 ng/l), were nearly twice as high as in the Savannah River (0.085 ng/l). Total mercury levels in the tributaries (2.98 ng/l) did not differ significantly from the river (2.59 ng/l). All of the tributaries drained extensive wetlands that would be expected to support comparatively high rates...

Cotton strips as a leaf surrogate to measure decomposition in river floodplain habitats

Leaf-litter assays have advanced understanding of decomposition processes in both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. Some shortcomings inherent in the technique may be overcome through use of a cotton-strip assay. Key assumptions for using cotton strips as proxies for natural leaves are: 1) decomposition rates of the 2 materials are related, and 2) the materials decay in a similar way when exp...

River Floodplain Connectivity and Lateral Fish Passage: A Literature Review

Floodplains play a key role in the ecology of the Upper Mississippi River; however, humans have significantly affected the ecological function of floodplains by isolating them from the main stem of the river with levees. Impoundment and channel training within the main stem also influence floodplain function by altering the flow of water through the system. Because of the key role hydrology pla...
